“I am a disabled artist and service dog handler with multiple chronic illnesses (ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, gastroparesis, dysautonomia, chronic migraine, and more). Born and raised in Southern California, I studied at both Carnegie Mellon University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Burren College of Art in County Clare, Ireland, graduating with a BFA in painting and drawing, and my work has been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad. My current work focuses on documenting and processing my experiences with my chronic conditions, giving my viewers the unique opportunity to witness the realities of day-to-day disabled life. I currently live and work just outside of Nashville, Tennessee with my medical alert service dog, Rico, and my retired service dog, Rosie.”

“As my chronic illnesses became more severe, my art started to become a way for me to process what I was going through. My work began reflecting my surroundings, and I found myself painting IV's and exam rooms, sketching my medications on my pill refill days, and doing watercolors of bright yellow hospital socks through a series called "Catharsis," where I documented and processed my journey through illness and disability. I was compelled to document my life as a chronically ill person, partially for myself, but also for others. This also brought about my "Get Well Soon" series as I was sent flowers during my illness, and was faced with the reality that I would never truly "get well." In both of these bodies of work, I felt that it was important to give the viewer a chance to observe what life can be like for someone who is chronically ill.”

“You can listen to a full interview about how my chronic illness has impacted my art practice here in an interview with Ted Meyer with Our Heart Speaks.”

ASHLEY’S FEATURED ART

Get Well Soon Bouquet

Gouache and colored pencil on paper. 12"x9".

“This is the latest painting in my series, “Get Well Soon,” which is a collection of flower bouquets that I have received and painted along my journey with chronic illness, combined with accompanying text that contextualizes each floral assortment. The series title, “Get Well Soon,” is an allusion to the common (yet well intentioned) misunderstanding that people with chronic illness will “get well,” when in reality, they’re in it for the long haul.

The text for this piece reads: “I’m grateful for the support systems I have in place with my partner, family, and friends, because without them, I would be so very lost in this medical journey with all of its twists and turns, plateaus, and pitfalls.””
