“I’m a self taught mixed media artist but I mainly paint with acrylics. I’ve found that my art style is very bold and colorful with a lot of deep meaning behind each piece. The colors are an extension of my emotion put into a visual format. I’ve always been a big anime and cartoon fan so that influenced my color schemes a lot. I find a lot of my inspiration comes from renaissance art and anime. I have done charity work since I was 5 years old and worked with the Muscular Dystrophy Association along with Party For A Cure by donating work to both organizations.”

“All my life I’ve been a very deep thinker even as a child and that has definitely come out of a necessity to understand how to live with my condition. I have congenital 6 muscular dystrophy and it’s been a struggle to stay active in art due to my contractures. However, I find that in the pain there is truth which brings more authenticity to what I do. I am working toward making more artwork and eventually doing exhibitions/ gallery work. I hope to one day have a small group that brings art supplies/lessons to disabled and less fortunate children. As a father and artist I want to give back to the kids because that’s really our future. I think art is a language we all speak but very few of us have the opportunity to learn. Recently I worked with a non profit group called Party for a Cure that helps to bring necessities/ support to those with neuromuscular conditions. I donated a piece of art that brought in $1,400 at their gala charity auction. Now it hangs in someone’s home and serves as a reminder to me that we can always contribute to change in our own ways.”

“I think that my art has influenced my outlook on life as a whole. To say that my disability influenced my art is just as true as saying my art has influenced my living with a disability. I’m always portraying emotion and feeling and a lot of that comes from being disabled. Similarly, being an artist has helped me see the beauty in having struggled with my condition.”

CHRIS’S FEATURED ART

Stay Afloat

Acrylic on canvas. 20”x20”.

“While reading “Where The Wild Things Are” to my son, I got the inspiration behind this piece. The main character sails away on an imaginary boat as he is avoiding his reality after a tantrum. This made me have a thought about navigating life’s troubles as a disabled person. I find that even in the darkness we can find our way. The water being calm, only moving as the boat travels across, represents how calming our emotions can help us to think clearly while combating the issues we face. The paper boat represents how fragile our emotional state can be and still be able to stay afloat. The dark starry sky represents what it feels like when we are searching for guidance in what seems like emptiness. I also painted this with a palette knife to convey a less “perfect” yet complete image. This related to me a lot because it allowed me to think about how I navigate my own emotions living with a disability.”
